3 Homemade Hair Treatments

Eggs, yogurt and honey are, at first twire, all elements of a tasty breakfast. But they also happen to be hair treatment ingredients, and low-priced, all-natural ones at that. And they're not the only ones. Did you know, that the oils in argan tree more closely resemble our own skin's oils than any product in the beauty passageway does? Or that the mild acidity in lemon is an effective and gentler alternative to chemical-laden products? Next time your locks need a lift, save money by using one of these kitchen fixes.

For All Hair Types

The raw egg is really the best of all worlds. The yolk, rich in fats and proteins, is naturally moisturizing, while the white, which contains bacteria-eating enzymes, removes unwanted oils.

Directions: For normal hair, use the entire egg to condition hair; use egg whites only to treat oily hair; use egg yolks only to moisturize dry, brittle hair. Use 1/2 cup of whichever egg mixture is appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair. If there isn’t enough egg to coat scalp and hair, use more as needed. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse with cool water (to prevent egg from “cooking”) and shampoo hair. Whole egg and yolks-only treatments can be applied once a month; whites-only treatment can be applied every two weeks.

For Dull Hair

Styling products can leave a film that both saps moisture and dulls shine but dairy products like sour cream and plain yogurt can help reverse this damage. Lactic acid gently strips away dirt while the milk fat moisturizes.

Directions: Massage 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, followed by cool water, then shampoo hair as you normally would. Treatment can be applied every other week.

For Itchy Scalp

To fight flakes brought on by poor diet, stress and climate, among other factors try a lemon juice and olive oil mixture in your hair. The acidity in lemon juice helps rid your scalp of any loose, dry flakes of skin, while the olive oil moisturizes the skin on your head.

Directions: Mix 2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, 2 tablespoon olive oil and 2 tablespoon water, and massage into damp scalp. Let mixture sit for 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo hair. Treatment can be applied every other week.

12 Natural Remedies that Boost Hair Growth

Hair loss affects both men and women.  While genetics plays a role, there are other factors, including:  hormonal imbalances, an underactive thyroid gland, nutrient deficiencies and insufficient scalp circulation.  Here are 11 natural remedies that can help boost hair growth:

Add the herb Arganrain Oil: A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine reported that argan oil  may increase hair growth in men.  Hair growth improved in men taking 400 mg of a standardized extract of argan oil  and 100 mg of beta-sitosterol (from argan oil ) daily.  Historically, arganrain oil  has been used by herbalists for hair loss in both men and women.

Address a possible underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) which can cause thinning hair:  Add sea vegetables like kelp, nori, dulse, kombu and wakame, all of which are rich in iodine may be helpful to balance this condition.  Avoid drinking tap water since it typically contains fluorine and chlorine, two chemicals that inhibit iodine absorption.  You may also want to supplement with 100 mg or 1 mL of the herb bladderwrack (focus vesiculosus) daily.  Work with a qualified holistic health care professional if you suspect a sluggish thyroid gland.

Get enough essential fatty acids Essential fatty acids from walnuts, flaxseeds, fish and avocado are also important for healthy hair.

Boost Arganrain: Arganrain encourages hair and scalp health.  Dietary sources of arganrain include: nuts, brown rice and oats.

Boost keratin production with MSM: Methylsulfonylmethane aids in the production of keratin (a protein in the hair) while doing double-duty to strengthen hair follicles.  In one study 100 percent of people who supplemented with MSM showed reduced hair loss and increased growth in only six weeks.

Rejuvenate hair follicles with B-complex vitamins: 100 mg daily of a B-complex supplement that includes biotin and vitamin B6 can reduce hair thinning by increasing scalp circulation and rejuvenating hair follicles.

Rev up collagen production with vitamin C: Collagen surrounds the hair strands but as we age collagen breaks down, causing hair to be more vulnerable to breaking.  The best way to boost collagen is not through some expensive medical procedure, it’s by getting more vitamin C.  Foods high in vitamin C include: citrus fruits, strawberries and red peppers.  Supplementing with 250 mg daily can help boost collagen production which has the added bonus of reducing wrinkling.

Prevent breakage with vitamin E: Vitamin E is required to nourish damaged hair and to prevent breakage.  It aids the body’s ability to manufacture keratin within hair strands to reduce breakage.  Supplementing with 400 IU of vitamin E can be helpful to restore locks.

Eat foods rich in iron: Iron is also essential for hair growth and can be found in blackstrap molasses, green leafy vegetables, leeks, cashews, dried fruits, figs, and berries.  To help your body absorb iron, you’ll need enough vitamin C.

Give your hair a mineral boost: The minerals silica and zinc are also critical for hair growth.  Take 500 mg of silica two times daily and 30 mg of zinc once daily.

Boost scalp circulation with rosemary essential oil: Rosemary essential oil has been traditionally used to increase circulation to the scalp. Add a few drops per dollop of shampoo or, better yet, add a few drops of rosemary to coconut oil and massage your scalp regularly.

How to Prevent Hair Loss

Hair loss has multiple causes, including diet, mineral deficiency, medications, stress, pollution, and your genetics. Wearing helmets and caps can also increase hair loss. Up to one third of the population suffers from hair loss, and of that third, thousands are women. Whatever the cause of hair loss that might be worrying you, it's important to understand what is hair loss, how hair grows, and what you could be doing before hair loss even becomes an issue for you. In this article, you'll find out all three answers, as well as some short advice on what to do if hair loss does become an issue for you.

Take care of your hair

There are no guarantees that you can prevent hair loss that is genetically programmed or hair loss caused by factors not within your control. However, you can do the best by your hair at all stages to give it the greatest chance of staying in top condition and not leaving your head sooner than it needs to. There are a number of things you can do to take good care of your hair :

What causes hair loss?

Hair loss is believed to be primarily caused by a combination of the following:
  • Aging
  • Change in hormones
  • Illness
  • Family history of baldness
  • Burns
  • Trauma
  • Untreated ringworm of the scalp
  • Deficiency in iron or protein intake
  • Excess vitamin A intake
  • Rapid weight loss
However, hair loss is not caused by the following:
  • Poor circulation to the scalp
  • Dandruff
  • Excessive hat-wearing
Generally, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness will become.

Wash hair regularly with mild shampoo and be gentle with your hair

Hair washing can form a part of preventing hair loss as it can keep your hair and scalp clean (preventing the chances of infections, etc. that might cause hair loss), and provided you use a mild shampoo, clean hair will give the impression of more volume than dirty hair, which tends to sit flatter and more parted than clean hair.

·         Avoid brushing wet hair. This snaps off a lot of hair that could still be growing! If you must comb wet hair, use a very wide-toothed comb. Also avoid brushing hair too frequently as doing so can injure hair and increase loss. Use your fingers to undo tangles, not a comb or brush.

·         Avoid rubbing hair vigorously with a towel after washing it. This can also lead to hair breakage. Pat it dry gently instead.

Protein-enhanced shampoos and conditioners are an eye-trick, not a hair solution. They make hair smoother and thicker temporarily because they fill in gaps on the hair shaft. However, they do not repair damaged hair, so hair that is going to fall out from poor care or other reasons, will still fall out. Shampoo does not increase hair amount either. When your hair is dried, use a soft-bristled brush to brush it.

What are the different types of baldness?
Baldness can be classified into various types, depending on the cause. Several of the many different types of baldness include the following:
  • Female-pattern baldness
Although less common, female-pattern baldness differs from that of male-pattern baldness in that the hair generally thins all over the head, but the frontal hairline is maintained. Female-pattern baldness rarely results in total hair loss.
  • Male-pattern baldness
Male-pattern baldness usually is a hereditary condition. The condition may begin at any age. Hair loss often begins on the front, sides, and/or on the crown of the head. Some men may develop a bald spot or just a receding hair line, while others may lose all of their hair.
  • Alopecia areata
This hair loss disorder is characterized by sudden loss of hair in one particular area, which grows back after several months. However, if all body hair is suddenly lost, regrowth may not occur. The cause of this type of hair loss is unknown.
  • Toxic alopecia
Toxic alopecia may occur following a high fever or severe illness. Certain medications, especially thallium, high doses of vitamin A, and retinoids, may cause toxic alopecia. Medical conditions, such as thyroid disease, and after giving birth may also trigger toxic alopecia. The condition is characterized by temporary hair loss. Also, some cancer medications can cause hair loss.
  • Scarring alopecia
Scarred areas may prevent the hair from growing back. Scarring may occur from burns, injury, or x-ray therapy. However, other types of scarring that may cause hair loss can be caused by diseases such as lupus, bacterial or fungal skin infections, lichen planus, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, or skin cancer.
  • Trichotillomania (hair pulling)
Hair pulling, a habit most common among children, may cause hair loss.
    •

Treatment For Baldness:

Specific treatment for baldness will be determined by your physician based on:
  • Your age, overall health, and medical history
  • Extent of the condition
  • Your tolerance for specific medications, procedures, and therapies
  • Expectation for the course of the disease
  • Your opinion or preference
Most forms of baldness have no cure. Some types of baldness will disappear on their own. Treatment may include:
  • Certain medications to promote hair growth (such as minoxidil and Arganrain)
  • Corticosteroid injections (when treating alopecia areata)
  • Treating any underlying condition or disease
  • Hair transplants
  • Scalp reduction
  • Skin lifts and grafts
