Male and Female-Pattern Baldness

Male-pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss. As well as affecting men, it can sometimes affect women (female-pattern baldness). It can be particularly difficult for both men and women to cope with. Male-pattern baldness follows a pattern of a receding hairline, followed by thinning of the hair on the crown and temples. During female-pattern baldness, hair usually only thins on top of the head. Male- and female-pattern baldness is also called androgenic or androgenetic alopecia. Male-pattern baldness is a condition that runs in families, but it is not clear if this is the case with female-pattern baldness.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is patches of baldness that may come and go. It can occur at any age, but mostly affects teenagers and young adults. Six out of 10 people affected develop their first bald patch before they are 20 years old. Alopecia areata is thought to be caused by a problem with the immune system (the body's natural defence against infection and illness). It is also believed that some people's genes make them more susceptible to alopecia areata, as one in five people with the condition have a family history of the condition. In many cases the hair grows back after about a year.

Scarring alopecia

Scarring alopecia, also known as cicatricial alopecia, is hair loss that can occur as a result of complications from another condition. In this type of alopecia, the hair follicle (the small hole in your skin that an individual hair grows out of) is completely destroyed. This means your hair will not grow back.
Conditions that can cause scarring alopecia include lichen planus (an itchy rash affecting many areas of the body) and discoid lupus (a mild form of lupus affecting the skin, causing scaly marks and hair loss).

Anagen effluvium

Anagen effluvium is widespread hair loss that can affect your scalp, face and body. One of the most common causes of this type of hair loss is the cancer treatment chemotherapy.
It may be possible to reduce hair loss from chemotherapy by wearing a special cap that keeps the scalp cool. However, scalp cooling is not always effective and not widely available.
In most cases, hair loss in anagen effluvium is temporary. Your hair should start to grow back a few months after chemotherapy has stopped.

Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a common type of alopecia where there is widespread thinning of the hair, rather than specific bald patches. Hair is shed from the scalp, usually as a reaction to stress or medication. This type of hair loss tends to improve without treatment after a few months.

How is hair loss treated?

More common types of hair loss, such as male-pattern baldness, do not need treatment because they are a natural part of ageing and do not pose a risk to your health. However, any type of hair loss can be distressing, so you should see your GP if you are worried about it. Your GP should be able to diagnose your type of hair loss by examining your hair, and they can also discuss possible treatments with you. It is advisable to visit your GP before you try a private consultant dermatologist (skin care specialist).

If you wish to seek treatment for male-pattern baldness for cosmetic reasons. However, these treatments are not effective for everyone and only work for as long as they are continued. These treatments are also not available on the NHS and can be expensive. Alopecia areata is usually treated with steroid injections, although it is sometimes possible to use a steroid cream, gel or ointment. A treatment called immunotherapy may also be used. This involves stimulating hair growth by causing an intentional allergic reaction in the affected areas of skin. If you have significant hair loss of any type, you may decide to wear a wig. Wigs are available on the NHS, but you may have to pay for one unless you qualify for help with charges. There are also some surgical options for hair loss, including a hair transplant and artificial hair implants.

Emotional issues

Hair loss can be difficult to come to terms with. The hair on your head can be a defining part of your identity. It reflects the image you have of yourself and how you want others to see you. If you start to lose your hair, it can feel as if you are losing part of your identity. This can affect your self-confidence and sometimes lead to depressionSpeak to your GP if you are finding it difficult to deal with your hair loss. They may suggest counselling, which is a type of talking therapy where you can discuss your issues with a trained therapist. You may benefit from joining a support group or speaking to other people in the same situation – for example, through online forums. A number of charities, such as Alopecia UK, have support groups and online forums where you can talk to others who are experiencing hair loss.

Any tips for an 18-yr old male with hair loss?

It started at age 16, I thought it was initially due to use of hair-gel, but now I don't use gel anymore but I still have the hair-loss problem increasing on the temple of my head. Hair falls off easily sometimes while combing and after showers.... Also I sweat easily on that part of my head. Please, do you have any tips of any natural oils or supplements I may take?

ANSWER :

Hello,

The use of hair gel, as well as, showering are not reasons why you are experiencing hair loss. It could be
a combination of stress, hormonal imbalance and genetics.

What kind of treatment is best for hair loss?

What kind of treatment is best for hair loss?

I'm trying to find the best natural or any product best to stop my hair from fall in give have hair loss since starting getting my period and it been getting thin i need help :( ! I don't want to wear a wig or any of those stuff i want my hair back.

ANSWER:

There seem to be as many treatments available for hair loss nowadays as the number of people suffering from it. Hundreds of products claiming to cure hair loss as well as help in the growth of new hair are available in the markets. So how do you choose the best from what is available? Hair loss surgery is a sure fire way to treat hair loss. The different kinds of surgeries include Hair Transplantation, Scalp Reduction, FlapSurgery, and Tissue Expansion. But these should only be used as a last resort and for extensive hair loss. Other hair loss treatments depend on the cause for hair loss.

For me, the best one is Arganrain products.

HEAT & CHEMICALS ARE Hair's Worst Enemies

ELIMINATE  the CAUSES for DRY HAIR FOREVER

Hair gets very dry from too much sun exposure, same with the skin.Shampooing in hot water & chlorine in the pool causes the skin to get 'dishpan' hands look,so does the hair. So use warm water.Blow drying too long.

If you need to blow dry, towel dry first air dry some, then blow dry for 5 mins.Don't use products containing sulfate, slicon, dye, salt and alcoholPerming, relaxing & dyeing all causes hair feeling like hay. Get frequent trims, allowing new growth to take over.

Don't shampoo often. Washing less often, builds the natural oil your hair needs, to get them smoother, shinier, silkier, softer. Man-made products are just temporary, until you wash them again, and at the same time washing off the natural oil your hair NEEDS. Hair products  just absorbs on your hair if they're dry, like a sponge.

Avoid too much brushing or styling in the winter. Harsh winter months can leave your hair dry, dull, brittle, or frizzy.

DOs:

1. Cover your hair with a scarf or hat when you go outside to prevent sunburned even during
winter.

2. At the end of washing your hair, rinse it thoroughly with cold water. This locks in moisture, according to some experts and gives your hair extra shine.

3. Always dry your hair thoroughly before you go outside, since damp hair can freeze and break.

4. If you are looking for a overall professional hair care product which  heals and restore the damage.

Is 20 Too Young To Get A Hair Transplant?

I'm 18, but I'm planning on getting a hair transplant when I'm 20. I haven't actually lost much hair.. I've always had a bad hairline.

ANSWER :

If parts of it are too low then you could get some hair removed via laser to make it more even.

If you need to fill in gaps then you should go for that newer style of hair transplant which does not take a whole strip from the back of your head but takes hairs from all over and punches them back in. Forget what it is called.

Why don't you reconsider it and try and accept your hairline.
You're so young, and I'm sure it's not bad at all. :) Maybe it's just uniquely you. For hair loss i would suggest you Chemical-free anti hair loss products.

Healthy Hair Tips - Stop Hair Loss

The following are some basic hair care tips that you can use to improve the health and look of your hair.

          General

A healthy lifestyle will mean healthier hair for you. Excessive stress, smoking, not exercising and not eating nutritiously are not healthy for your hair.
Get enough sleep.

Hair Products (Gel, mouse, hair spray...)

Avoid using hair styling products with alcohol which dries out hair. Avoid puting hair styling products directly on your scalp; if you put it on your scalp you'll clog the pores on your head.

        Swimming

Before entering a pool, wet your hair so your hair will soak up the initial water instead of the chlorinated waterWhen swimming where a cap to protect your hair from chlorinated water, if you choose not to wear a cap make sure you shampoo and condition your hair right after you are done swimming.

            Drying

Hot air can be damaging to your hair so when using a hair dryer use the cool setting.
Don't leave the blowdryer in one spot for more than a few seconds, keep it moving and at a good distance away from your hair.

To speed up the drying process, pat your hair dry with a towell and let the remaining moisture in your hair dry naturally.
Gently use your fingers or a pick to untangle any knots while your hair is drying.

     Combing/Brushing

Use a brush whose bristles are made from natural animal hairs, it is softer and more flexible, which means less damage will be done to your hair. Hair is most fragile when it is wet so avoid brushing or combing when it's wet, or else it will cause breakage. Wait until your hair is almost completely dry before brushing it. Use brushes/combs with widely spaced bristles/teeth and smooth tips. Sharp tooth combs can damage your hair, cause split ends, and scratch your scalp.

To keep your brushes and combs clean, wash them weekly using soap or shampoo. Comb your hair to remove any tangles before brushing it. Begin by combing your hair gently at the ends to get any tangles out and work your way up to the base of your hair. Always brush/comb with a downwards stroke. Avoid using plastic brushes/combs which create static electricity

       Shampooing and Conditioning

Buy shampoos & conditioners that match your hair type. Trial and error is the best way to find out what specific hair product is best for your hair. Shower with warm water; hot water can dry and/or irritate the scalp. It is important to wash your hair; shampooing removes dirt, dead skin cells, hair oils, any hair products you may put into your hair.

When shampooing, rinse your hair out before applying any shampoo to remove any dust, dirt, and any other foreign items, then apply the shampoo onto your scalp and massage it gently with your finger tips and work your way outwards. After you are done make sure that you thouroughly rinse out your hair to remove any shampoo residue that may be left. Shampoo residue may dry your scalp/hair and or attract dirt. It is recommended that you only lather once to avoid drying your hair out.

If you have oily hair, lathering again may stimulate your oil glands to create even more oil than normal. You should wash your hair as often as you feel necessary to keep it clean but a general rule for oily hair is that you should wash it every day or every other day and for dry hair only wash it 2-3 times a week.

Try rotating the shampoo and conditioner periodically, your hair responds differently to different products. The most popular one for faster hair growth and anti-hair loss products. Use a conditioner after shampooing; it'll moisturize your hair, give it extra protection, add shine, reduce static, and makes it easier to untangle.

Use a leave in conditioner; it'll hydrate and protect your hair. A leave in conditioner on your hair is the equivalent of moisturizer on your face. When conditioning your hair, try to spread conditioner evenly through out your hair and leave it in for a couple of minutes before rinsing out your hair.

Put the conditioner in at about an inch away from the scalp, the roots of your hair contain the most oils and usually don't need the extra conditioning. Be gentle when shampooing and conditioning. Don't use excessive force rubbing your hair, remember hair is most vunerable when wet.
